Vrije Universiteit

Vrije Universiteit Brussel includes the research group imec-SMIT-VUB, which specializes in research on media and innovation. Established in 1990, SMIT has grown into a major research center in Europe. SMIT has a long-standing expertise in European media policy and film & TV economics research. In these domains, the research group has become a reference both at a national and international level. Recent work includes research on the transformative impact of global platforms on the production, distribution, and consumption of audiovisual content, particularly assessing the effects of streaming services on the sustainability of small markets. Our approach aligns business modeling and market analysis both on a meso (sectoral) level and an individual (firm) level. We have conducted studies for the European Commission, Screen Brussels, VRT, SBS, Google, the Flemish Independent Film and Television producers' organisation and the Flanders Audiovisual Fund among others.

Research Themes

  • WP6 will create new knowledge on the needs of the sub-sectors of distribution, exhibition, and marketing. It aims to identify future-proof scenarios and strategies for building scale and provide learning guides for improving competitiveness in distribution and exhibition. The focus is both on growing the strength of these sub-sectors in the small EU markets and on improving the global distribution, exhibition, and marketing of content from these markets.
